USPS Mail

If you have received mail that does not belong to your department, has been misdelivered, or needs to be forwarded, review the options below for returning the mail to the Postal Service.

Unable to Forward (UTF)

If mail is delivered to the correct address, but the recipient is not at that address and you DO NOT have a forwarding address, follow these steps:

  • Write the abbreviation UTF in black ink on the left side of the existing address
  • Do not cross out the address
  • Do not cross out the barcode
  • Separate letters from flats
  • Keep separate from the rest of your mail
  • Place in the mailroom for your USPS carrier

Loop Mail

If First Class, Priority, or Foreign mail is delivered to the correct address, but the recipient is not at that address and you DO have a forwarding address, follow these steps: 

  • Leave the incorrect address unchanged
  • Handwrite the forwarding address to the right of the old address
  • Draw a line through the barcode with a grease pencil
  • Separate letters from flats
  • Keep separate from the rest of your mail
  • Place in the mailroom for your USPS carrier

Missorted Mail

If you have mail that is addressed correctly but has been delivered to your building by mistake, follow these steps:

  • Do not open or mark the mail in any way
  • Separate letters from flats
  • Keep separate from the rest of your mail
  • Place in the mailroom for your USPS carrier
